Keep the Message Focused
You've been through it before. Your exhibit team is brainstorming. Ideas are flying around at breakneck speed. People are getting more and more excited about what they are hearing. And visions are moving through so fast through your head that you worry about forgetting everything. Then, in the process of converting all those wonderful ideas into a real product, it happens: somehow the product does not say what the team wanted it to say -- and you are out of time. Sure, the exhibit looks great, but something is just not right.

The exhibit structure is visually inviting, but it does not seem to capture the essence of your project. You have developed and designed a really cool interactive devise, but it does not have anything to do with your message. Your graphics are eye popping beautiful, but don't seem to send out the right signals. The giveaways your team has chosen are great on their own, but don't connect with the exhibit.

The problem has a simple remedy: scrutinize everything down to the finest detail. Seems obvious, huh? Yet, the obvious and the simple seem to escape us when a project gets derailed and you can't find a way to get it back on track. Ask any athlete about recovering from a slump, and he or she will tell you that the only way out is by getting back to the basics.

One of the basics that I return to when an exhibit project seems not to be working is to print the exhibit's goals and post them where they constantly confront me. Then I cannot escape from not only what I need to accomplish but, most important, what I want to convey to the target audience. Everything you do -- every detail, every seemingly insignificant item -- must communicate clearly and convincingly to your audience how your product will benefit them. Hard as it may be, you have to let go of all those great ideas that just do not help carry the message.

The sure tip-off to superfluous ideas comes when you find yourself rationalizing to yourself or arguing strenuously with a colleague that a particular idea really does fit. Face it: the message does not belong in the exhibit. Don't charge ahead on an idea that you know looks cool until you make sure it supports and enhances your goal.

To illustrate, when our creative team at Lynch Exhibits started conceptualizing and developing an approach for our exhibit at the 2005 Exhibitor Show, we worked very hard to make sure all elements, even the giveaways, related to and strengthened our message. Coming up with the visual concept took only a few hours - and all of us were excited. Then, over the following weeks, the pieces of the concept got questioned, twisted, delayed, and sometimes even forgotten. However, we were determined to salvage and strengthen the good idea we had at the beginning .

As quickly as the idea came, it still took weeks to refine the idea into a final product that we could be proud of. Over those weeks we continually reviewed the concepts we had to make sure everything clearly communicated our message. If anything was off the mark, it got revised or removed.

EDPA Foundation

EDPA Foundation's First Annual Las Vegas Scholarships Awarded
EDPA Foundation's Las Vegas Scholarship Fund awarded more than $8,000 in collegiate scholarship money to Brandy Coffins, Kerrie Caldron and Brittany Verhelst on March 15th at the 2005 Exhibitor Show in Las Vegas. The Scholarship Program was created to bestow college-level educational scholarships to children whose parent are involved within the exhibition industry in Southern Nevada.

Appointed by the EDPA Foundation Board of Trustees, members Gene Winther of Expon Exhibits, Robert Laarhoven of Laarhoven Design, Ray Montague of Avalon Exhibits and Pete Gallo of Vista Color Imaging judged the multiple entries in December 2004. Students were required to enter proof of parental employment in the exhibition industry, financial responsibility, GPA of at least 2.8, an essay, intended study at university and financial statement determining need. Winners were determined on a weighted point system. Awardees must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA, or equivalent, and provide a certified transcript with a new application each year.

Participants and sponsors of the Las Vegas Scholarship Charity Golf Tournament help raise the scholarship money each year for the students. The 2005 Tournament will be held August 9th at the Stallion Mountain Country Club in Las Vegas, Nevada. Each golf player donates $135 and receives a round of golf, gourmet lunch and the chance to win raffle prizes. Non-golfers can participate in lunch for a $45 donation. "In the past we have been able to put more than 60% of the proceeds into the scholarship fund," stated John Chadwick of TWI Global and Scholarship Committee Chair. The EDPA Foundation's goal is to award one new scholarship each year. For more information on the Scholarship Golf Tournament, contact John Chadwick at 702-691-9000 or for EDPA Foundation information; please contact Alex Grider at agrider@edpa.com.

First Annual EXHIBITOR SHOW Charity Poker Championship a Success
More than $10,000 was raised at the First Annual EXHIBITOR SHOW Charity Poker Championship held March 12 in conjunction with EXHIBITOR SHOW 2005 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Mark Bendickson, CEO of exhibit-design firm exhibitdesign, won the inaugural championship.

Each player contributed $1,000 to play in the Texas Hold'em championship. First prize was $3,000. The remaining proceeds will be donated to the Exhibit Designers & Producers Association Foundation (EDPAF), a nonprofit organization that provides education and financial assistance to trade show industry members.

"Everybody there saw this as the start of something big," says Lee Knight, founder of Exhibitor Magazine Group and EXHIBITOR SHOW. "A supplier has already contributed space for next year's championship, and people are already calling to participate." "Giving to the EDPAF is one way Exhibitor Magazine Group can support industry associations that ultimately give back to the trade show community," says John Pavek, vice president of publishing for Exhibitor Magazine Group.

"I thought it was fabulous," says Bendickson, this year's tournament winner. "It was a really fun way to raise money for a good cause."

Video highlights from the First Annual EXHIBITOR SHOW Charity Poker Championship, captured by Goodwyn Production Group, will be shown at the EDPA Annual Meeting.

The Charity Poker Championship is just one of several charitable activities Exhibitor Magazine Group has held in conjunction with EXHIBITOR SHOW. Past events include funding and building a Habitat for Humanity house in Las Vegas, volunteering at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, pairing professionals with Baltimore high school students, and matching funds for local projects.

EXHIBITTRADER.COM Sells London Based "Voyages of Discovery" Exhibition
Built for the Natural History Museum of London in 2000, the "Voyages of Discovery" exhibition was created to highlight British sea voyages of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. These voyages altered the course of human understanding of the natural world and the effects are still felt in science today. Containing examples gathered from around the globe, this exhibition made public the historic voyages of such noteworthy vessels as The Endeavor and The Beagle and illustrious members of their crews; Captain Cook, Sir Joseph Banks, and Charles Darwin. Following a successful run in London where it attracted approximately a half a million visitors, the exhibit traveled with great success to four museums in the United States; Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Houston Museum of Natural Science, The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the LA County Natural History Museum.

"In Late November of 2004, EXHIBITTRADER.COM was approached by the museum in London and negotiated a contract to create an interactive flash presentation and dedicated web page to promote the components being sold", says Jason Wooten, Director of New Business Development. EXHIBITTRADER.COM through its exclusive Internet portal and extensive database was able to connect the Natural History Museum in London with an interested buyer in the US and the majority of the traveling museum components were recently sold for an undisclosed amount.

studio III Opens An Inernational Sales Divistion in the UK
Atlanta-based studio III (www.studio-III.com), a full-service designer and manufacturer of exhibits, events, and environments, proudly announces the opening of an international sales division located in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. President Don Johnson chronicled the expansion as such: "The continuing demands of our existing international client base; specifically those in Western Europe, necessitated the need to provide a higher level of personalized service. The launching of "studio III UK, Ltd." allows us to solidify and expand on current relationships while providing a base to aggressively mine the mainland Europe and Pacific Rim marketplaces."

Keith Hale
The office, located in the historic Northern England town of Huddersfield, will provide sales; marketing; and logistical support to current European clientele along with driving new projects "for export" that will be fabricated at the company's Atlanta headquarters for U.S. tradeshows. Johnson noted that UK law dictates that an American-owned entity operate solely within its own infrastructure. To address that issue, Johnson recruited long-time friend and industry professional Keith Hale to serve as Managing Director of the division. A born-and-bred Londoner, Hale has spent over 20 years on the European trade show circuit, most-recently with Display International. The move has paid immediate dividends. Hale excitedly proclaimed: "The official opening took place on Monday, February 14, 2005. One week later, we sent our first fabrication order to Atlanta for a stand to debut at CTIA in New Orleans."
